Global Health Trip to Guatemala
During Spring Break in 2014 I was given the opportunity to travel abroad in Guatemala. While studying, I was able to submerge myself into their culture while offering my services to them as a nursing student. I was fortunate enough to travel with other nursing students in all stages of the nursing program, ultimately enabling me the chance to network with other students. In Guatemala, we worked with a local organization called "La Corazon de los Ninos" ("The Heart of the Children") that supplies the locals with education, health care, and nutritional needs. While in Guatemala, we also provided the natives with two days of well visits and dental check-ups along with lice inspection and treatment. During those two days we gave the community education about diet and easy ways to achieve adequate nutrition. Additionally, we were invited to a local elementary school where we taught the children about dental health and hand washing. We also delivered fresh fruits and vegetables to impoverished community members during our visit. Lastly, we were fortunate enough to spend some time learning the language, enjoying the local food, and visiting fun attractions such as the ziplining park. I am so happy that I chose to be a part of this trip during my undergraduate career.
